Hello every friends. This is Tianzhao Abrasives in Zhenjiang. I'm the boss, Yuge. Today, based on my experience, I will introduce the steel paper grinding discs.
Using a fiber disc correctly is important — not just for efficiency, but also for safety and disc life. I’ll break it down in a practical, shop-floor way.
How to Use a Fiber Disc (Step-by-Step)
1. Prepare the tools
You need:
· Angle grinder
· Backing pad (very important)
· Fiber disc (correct size, usually 4"–7")
The fiber disc cannot be used alone — it must be mounted on a backing pad.
2. Choose the right backing pad
There are 3 common types:
· Hard pad → aggressive grinding, heavy stock removal
· Medium pad → general purpose
· Soft pad → finishing, curved surfaces
Rule: harder pad = faster cutting, softer pad = smoother finish
3. Mount the fiber disc
· Place the fiber disc on the backing pad
· Align the center hole
· Tighten with the grinder lock nut
Make sure:
· The disc sits flat
· No wobbling
4. Set the correct angle
This is where most people go wrong.
· Keep the grinder at ~10°–15° angle to the surface
· Do NOT use it flat (like sandpaper)
Too flat = poor cutting + overheating
Too steep = fast wear + safety risk
5. Start grinding properly
· Turn on the grinder before touching the surface
· Apply light to moderate pressure
· Let the abrasive do the work
Move in:
· Smooth, consistent strokes
· Avoid staying in one spot (prevents burning)
6. Control pressure
This is critical:
❌ Too much pressure:
· Burns the workpiece
· Wears disc very fast
· Reduces efficiency
✅ Correct pressure:
· Steady sparks
· Smooth cutting sound
· Even wear on disc
7. Replace when needed
Stop using the disc when:
· Abrasive is worn out
· Cutting becomes slow
· Fiber backing starts showing
Safety Tips (Must Follow)
· Always wear:
o Safety glasses
o Gloves
o Face shield (recommended)
· Check before use:
o No cracks or damage
o Correct RPM rating
· Never:
o Use without guard
o Exceed grinder speed
o Use a damaged disc
Pro Tips (From Industry Practice)
· For steel → use zirconia or ceramic discs
· For stainless steel → use ceramic (less heat, better finish)
· For fast stock removal → use coarse grit (24–36)
· For finishing → use finer grit (60–120)
Common Beginner Mistakes
1. Using without backing pad ❌
2. Pressing too hard ❌
3. Grinding at 0° (flat) ❌
4. Choosing wrong grit ❌
Business Insight (for you)
In real workshops:
· Workers often use fiber discs incorrectly
· This leads to:
o Faster consumption
o Higher cost
o Inconsistent results
Smart suppliers don’t just sell discs — they:
· Teach usage
· Recommend correct setup
· Improve customer efficiency
